Replacing the Audio 50 APS with an after market 2-din head unit

Hi! I am new to this forum, so be kind :-)

I recently bought a R320 CDI(2006), with a lot of options, but good sound was not one of them, or iphone/ipod compability for that matter. It has bluetooth, navigation(but small display, so pretty useless) however.

My big question is simpel: is it easy(or even possible), to install a new 2-din head unit from one of the big brands out there, connecting it to the car's wiring and loose as little functions as possible? I have a skilled friend that will help me(but he is a beemer guy :-)), but can it be done?

It would solve the ipod/iphone stuff, as well as the sound quality, I expect it to look good as well(full touch screen instead of today's unit)

Any brands/models that are easier to install than others?

Do I have to reprogram the car after?

Any advice on this is a great help!

P.S I live in Norway, not many r-classes here..

Ole

Is it correct that the unit in R, is identical with the one in ML and GL?

If this is the case, this could be a solution:

Anyone with experience with this brand?

Ole

hello
First of all the head unit itself is probably just as good in sound as most aftermarket units. I have a c240 with audio 20 and took it apart to see.. it has a very good dsp and amp. The stock speakers are more to blame. So just replacing the HU wont change much. Plus it will be difficult to get all the instrument panel redouts.

Are you sure there is no other way to get an MP3 input? was there no option for this? Remeber that it is easy to burn CDs...and cheap... instead of spending gazilions of dollars to replace the HU.

Try just putting in better speakers to start. If that does not changethings enough then consider adding aftermarket gear such as a JBL MS8 or Alpine Imprint system that can take the standard speaker level outputs and do wonders with them. The MS8 also has an auxiliary input for your Ipod.
