tailgate supports
My '06 R-500's rear gate door support pistons have lost their ability to hold the gate open. This is a manually operated lift. How difficult is it to replace them and are they "special order" as the dealer($570 to fix) states?

If the strut design is similar to the power liftgate, it's a pretty time consuming job (I think at least 5 hours at the dealer). On the power liftgate, they have two gas struts built into the top of the headliner area (above the trunkspace) that act as a failsafe if the hydraullic pump fails. The rear part of the headliner has to be lowered in order to reach them.
On your R Class are the gas struts visible on the outside of the trunk area, or are they near the hinge inside the headliner (you can see it if you peek through the hinge opening).
