After reading this thread. Yes, mine did slam shut occasionally. All the doors on this model are fairly heavy.
It took 2 and a half months but back on the road again. The door now shuts smooth as butter. It seems as if the open/close motor can be tuned or adjusted.

2 1/2 MONTHS? What the... But, your hatch works! Enjoy your R... We do!
Been working fine since the SAM switch, go figure. Still rather 'slams'.

latch problem

i have had nothing but problems with my latch on my 2007 r320cdi..it's on its third latch and i was told by the dealer that it would be the last free replacement...sometimes when a window is open, it will bounce before the latch can catch..it's still working but this definitely is a sore point with us owners and should be with mercedes...there is something very wrong with its design and mechanical coordination between the trunk closing motor and the latch that secures it to lock...

2007 R320 4matic / Airmatic
Mine did something a bit unusual over the weekend. I was out camping with the car, doing a few partial openings of the hatch as needed, and I noticed upon closing that the latch did not appear to be pulling the hatch closed like it normally does. Yet, the hatch was definitly latched and could not be pulled open. I tried several times, thinking it was due to the partial openings, and each time it clicked shut without the usual *whir & pull-down*. After I returned home I noticed it was behaving normally again.

Does anyone know of a way to override the electric lift and latch, so the hatch can be operated manually without damaging anything? I really don't need the electric feature, and it appears some cars were not fitted with it. Can the manual operation be retrofitted?

Tailgate update

4 months, and still working, still 'whumps' closed, but it opens and closes right and tight, so we're happy.

Pete, interesting. How did you 'partially open' and close? Auto or manual?

(anybody else think that "ding - ding - ding ..." sounds like a railroad crossing?)

Power tailgate. When opening or closing, it can be stopped in any position by re-actuating any of the tailgate switches (driver door, red button on tailgate bottom, outer tailgate latch handle, key fob). See pages 123-129 of the owners manual.

I just HATE when people make me look like the dummy I am. I may have read that a couple of years ago, but with age comes leaky memory, among other things. Thanks for the reminder! With my luck the railroad alarm won't work and the door will come down just as I have my azz partially inside.

R350
Sorry for topping an old thread, but the liftgate on our 2007 R350 slams down so hard, it rattles the whole car! It goes, ding, ding, KA-BLAM!, whir, click.

But recently (and the reason I'm reading about R350 liftgates today), the whir sound has been replaced by a series of grinding sounds, and the liftgate is left latched, but slightly ajar.

I wonder if the failure is due to the latch getting slammed into the body 4x daily?

Based on information gleaned from other threads, I am ordering a new latch today (part linked below), and some trim panel clips, hopefully I can install it myself!

Ours has always SLAMMED shut. Then the grinding sounds started, and we had the latch replaced by Indy for less than $500.
Works 99% of the time, sometimes it goes back up after SLAMMING, but second try works. We're always careful not to have anything inside that might interfere with closing.
Tailgate is probably the most problematic item on these cars. Love the car, though.

Ours is an 07 R320 CDI with 178K on it. Closes smooth every time.
