Question Camshaft Position Sensor A

Yesterday I went to visit a friend of mine and my car would not turn over, my bud plugged in a scanner and it came back:

Camshaft Position Sensor A-89498e28-a70a-400c-a78a-84b23b490721-148-00000005ecb492a5.jpg

Now I went to the dealer and asked how much was a camshaft position sensor they printed up the quote but never told me that there was more then one (or am I mistaken?) I found a website that sells cheap MB parts and when I searched "Camshaft Position Sensor" it came back with 2 Part# 2729050043 and 2720510177 now one is $212.55 and the other $22.00 which one could it be? Does anyone know or have come across this before?

I've been searching. Maybe I've overlooked! But I cant find a "DIY" or "How to" on how to change the Crankshaft sensor. I'm frustrated haven't been able to even access or see where it is. Can anyone help please?

I would love to be able to finish this today

hey jay,

crankshaft sensor failure is pretty much common on most Mercedes. I'm Not sure if you have a r500 or r350.. I know that in both e55 and e500 the sensor is located on the back of the engine (between the engine and the firewall) on the driver side. It was a tight squeeze and should only be 1 bolt holding it in place. If you already have the sensor get yourself in that area and peek down to see what it looks like. Also on both cars i replaced the sensor from the top.

Hope this helps.

This is going to be hard to do in an R. the location is right where the engine and transmission meet. I had to change one in my C-Class and ML several years ago. It was a quick DIY on both of these cars because it was fairly easy to access the location where the sensor mounts. Seems to go bad around the 100k mark of an engines life. Part is around $100, if you can access the sensor, should be a 15 minute swap out.

Here are a couple of links that might help, different engine but should be similar in location.

Excuse my ignorance, but is this connecting to a bad balancing shaft too?

hey virtual not exactly sure what you're our asking?

the sensor connects to nothing. it just reads the pulse of the automatic flexplate.

or maybe your'e asking if this code is in relation to a bad balance of the actual crankshaft. its a possibility, but highly unlikely.

this morning I left my house and stopped at dunkin donuts, when I came back my R wouldn't start. took a bunch of try's before it finally kicked over. after it started the check engine light was on and code for crank sensor came up.

I already had the crank sensor in the back of my car because I bought it planning on changing it on my next oil change anyway, these things failing are just way too common, if I had the chance I'd replace mine every 60k just as preventive maintenance and since I just bought my R at 90k and no idea if it's ever been done I just got one to change it before a problem came up... friggin problem cam up before I even had a chance to swap it

anyway I changed it tonight and it's really not that much more difficult on the R. it is quite a bit deeper in there because of the cab forward setup, but once you remove the covers and climb up on the radiator support and really get in there it's not that difficult to do it right there from the top. I took a few pics so I'll put up a diy for this in a bit
