17" is your best option. Period. Tires go on cheap at Wal-Mart each spring (under $80 in Montreal). The wheels come up (factory ones) every 4-6 months on kijiji $300 range for a set.
18" is too wide for winter use, it makes for a big footprint in the snow (which is bad).
I gain 15% in fuel economy when I put the 17" snows on (stepping down from the 18", closer to 30% when I had 22"). There are many advantages to 17" not just purchase price! I built my set for $800 with Michelin snows (new off kijiji) and used wheels off kijiji. I built another set for spares for $500 (new Wal-Mart snows, used wheels), things are always cheaper when you are not in a rush all on factory wheels for the R.

Yup.... what I was saying all along.... We lucked out having factory 17's.
Wife is not interested in trying to win an auto-cross....

Did you get OEM R class wheels?
7.5 J x 17 H2 with 2.20 in (56 mm) offset?
Just did some research and the 2007 M class 17inch wheels had same size and offset. May be much easier to find than R class. see attached.
You may find some at scrap yards too. I missed out on a set of R class 19 inchers last year... was looking for a rear quarter window glass and the used parts lot had a set of 19 inchers at a really good price... 2 weeks after I got new 18 inch summer tires... grrr.

Well... Mine has 18 inchers and if you look, the M and R have 6mm different offset... so I did not think they where the same setup....now you would say that 6mm is splitting hairs...

I am bout to pull the trigger on a set of 17 inchers with Bridgstone blizzaks
Any experience with these? Consumer reports has them as average for noise
I had a set of Toyos and they were very noisy.. Hate noise!
There is also a set of 19 inchers with Nokia hakapelitas...
Any thoughts?

I have Blizzaks on my Smart, and I'm quite happy with them. They're much grippier in the snow and ice than most snow tires. Noise is an inherent characteristic of snow tires, but I think the Blizzaks are pretty quiet. My Smart is an Electric Drive so I can hear everything.

haha! You need winter tires? Won't a pair of galoshes fit? Well at least you also own a real car!
My sister and bro in law have a Smart. I think I insulted them when I called it a toy. But in all honesty I am thrilled with it because it lets us share the tiny parking spot at the cottage.. I swear it takes up only a third of the space of my R! With LUV! :-)

We have a couple of 2015 Smarts for office use. I get teased about the "clown" cars. However, they cost next to nothing on gas compared to my Subaru and I can park them anywhere in Montreal. Best damn urban car for anyone needing to visit clients in the big city.
