2008 R320 CDI transmission problem
Hi, I'm new around here. I bought a 2008 R320 CDI in August with 207k km. It seemed to be in good shape and has been doing fine up until recently when the transmission crapped out.
I live in Toronto (ON, Canada). After an uneventful highway drive, pulling away from the red light at the highway exit the car was bucking, accelerating/not accelerating with the accelerator steady, and making a quiet whining sound that went up in pitch with the RPMs. I got it home but once there it wouldn't move in D or R. Turning the engine off and on I can get it to move slowly but eventually it stops moving and while the engine can be revved up and down, the car doesn't move.
From reading I've done it sounds like it could be the front pump and torque converter. I've also heard that the "electronics" in the early 7-speed transmissions were sometimes the culprit. (I don't claim to understand automatic transmissions.) Does my issue with the whine seem to be more mechanical than something causing a limp mode to be turned on by the electronics?
Anyway, I'm writing to ask for input on what the cause could be and of course an estimate on the repair cost and where to go so I don't get ripped off. My father owns a car repair shop but doesn't open up transmissions or deal with too many newer, high-end cars; so if it's something relatively simple we could try to tackle it, but if it involves dropping the transmission and a rebuild, we'd leave it to the pros.
Sorry for the long post, just trying to provide enough information. Thanks!
