CarQuest has a reasonably-priced AGM-type replacement with 6 year warranty. "Platinum"
I recently bought one - list was I think $180 and I got a break of about 20 on that.
The counterman told me he routinely sees them last 7 years.

This, compared with an emergency purchase from O'Reilly for a TDI - which cost more and warrantied for only 3 years!

Do be sure the icon is Red if you are only responding to a dashboard warning, the White battery icon means the small (aux) transmission battery.
These can be had from BatteriesPlus in Duracell for $22.

Lots of info on batteries can be found HERE. More than you probably want to know.

The thread focus' is primarily on group 48 (h6) but if you have the more desirable Group 49 (h8) most of it will cross over.

There are only three major manufacturers for auto batteries in the world, Exide, East Penn/Deka, and the largest, Johnson Controls ((JCI) who makes the OE under the brand Varta). My personal preference is East Penn/Deka.

Everything out there is just a sticker on a battery made by these big three. But that doesn't mean a manufacturer make a particular size using the same spec for each brand, so be careful. An honorable mention goes to the smaller company Enersys, the maker of the Optima battery. They are one of the original manufacturers of the Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery technology about 50 years ago.

You might also want to check out the Consumer Reports Battery Ratings. This will help to sort out the crap.

great info on your link. I have had great life out of the original Varta battery in my 2005 C240. I replaced the battery on my 2011 R350 with a Canadian Tire AGM brand. These are pretty popular up in Canada and I have had great life from them in the past. The original R350 battery was still in good shape so I put it in the C240 instead. but still 13 years from the OEM battery is amazing... unless it was replaced in the first 4 years as I got it used in 2009.. still that makes 9 year battery life..

Sorry to hear that. Many threads cover battery access and all strongly recommend not to disconnect the srs cables, you dont need to. Just unbolt the seat and rock forward... using the seat position controls to move the backrest as needed. My undestanding is that you must go to a shop with star reset capability.

Seems like the key to batteries is to keep them fully charged...

Benzballin, efauner, since you still have the original battery, could you post your model year and the battery dimensions? Length and width should be enough.

I'm trying to figure out if the group 48 (h6) or the Group 49 (h8) is standard equip and if it is, is it the same across all years. When I try to look it up on the various car part sites, some show one, some show the other... So if the H8 will fit, I'd rather have a larger battery.

BCI Group L5/H8, 1020 CA / 850 CCA, 160 min. reserve capacity 13-7/8" Length, 6-7/8" Width, 7-1/2" Height.
BCI Group L3/H6, 900 CA / 760 CCA, 120 min. reserve capacity. 10-7/8" Length, 6-7/8" Width, 7-1/2"

Both have the same width/height. only the length differs.
RM European has the H8 as For cars with High Capacity Battery (Code 673).
I wonder if most cars had that, since my 2005 C240 also had the big battery... unless it was changed to the big one before I got it.
so yes, my 2011 R350 gas also had H8 .... as did my previous 2008 R320CDI.

searches for ELU49/L5/H8 come up with the 13 7/8 long.
..

That's a good choice IMHO. The last battery I bought about four years ago was a Bosch for my SLK (an a East Penn / Deka group 48 h6.

It's just going out of warranty now, but so far so good..

The car sometimes sits under a cover for a several weeks at a time without being used, so I should prolly break down and get a decent trickle charger / maintainer to keep it alive.
