Front coil spring shocks

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has replaced the front shocks on their R-class. I’m not sure if I need a spring compressor for his job or not. Comments and tips much appreciated.

Thanks.

Marc

A spring compressor will be needed for this job.

Any recommendations for decent spring compressors? I hear of some of them bending. If I were closer to town, I would just take them into a shop, but given the relatively low cost, I’d rather do it myself. I’ll likely have to do my RAM 2500 eventually too, so a kit that is sturdy enough for both would be preferred.

Thanks again.

The Mercedes springs are particularly difficult to compress. The force required is extreme and the task is dangerous. We have all kinds of spring compressors at my shop, but every time we need to compress a Mercedes front spring, we cringe.

That’s one of my concerns with all these spring compressors on the market. Maybe i’ll by two sets to reduce the individual load. I watched a friend of mine (a mechanic) struggle with the ones off my E320.

I had to rent (for free from local canadian tire store) 2 of the spring compressors when I did my honda odyssey. It was still a PITA to do.
For my C240 I ended up cutting the chock strut because the securing nut was rusted in, but then going to a local small garage where the guy let me use his compressor.

You are probably best of bringing it to an indy to have the struts springs compressed or find a local DIY garage.

But the question is.. do they need replacing?
