Coolant smell or leak in cabin?

Hello
I had some coolant smells in the cabin and also after many years had a coolant level low warning. I added coolant to get rid of the warning.
Yet I cannot reproduce the coolant smell. Even if I turn on the heat to get coolant to flow thru the heater core I cannot get an odour.
It comes and goes randomly.

Any ideas? I tried to look for visible leaks under the hood, and close to the cabin air intake.. nothing..

Thanks

Coolant smell in the cabin generally means a heater core leak. It might be a very small leak that presents itself under certain temperature conditions. If the heater core is leaking, it will not be seen in the engine compartment or under the vehicle, if the leak is very small.

obviously... by turning on the heat I was trying to force that heater core leak...

PLOT THICKENS got CEL code p0128 coolant thermostat: Coolant temp below thermostat regulating temp..
Coolant temp ws 80C after 10minutes of driving. at 100kmh Should have warmed up by then..
I wonder if the coolant smell is due to over heating and overflow. Could be that thermostat and or temp sensor is bad.
Will check this..
well I did and may have been a quick.. coolant temp is ok... I may still change the thermstat.. just to make sure.

WTF This car has 2 temperature sensors.. on on the thermostat in front of engine.. easy enough
the main one used for engine control in in block on back of left bank. Remove cat con flange, remove drive shaft , remove cross member,. support transmission...
This is why I hate these cars sometimes. Makes me want to reject my German heritage...
