2009 R350 code 1337, no crank, remove key message (how are they related?)

2009 R350 code 1337, no crank, remove key message (how are they related?)
Went to start my R350 and got a half second crank and then nothing. Keep getting a "remove key" message as soon as I stick it in. Checked codes and see only a 1337 code for the alternator interface. Can this cause a no crank situation? What should I be looking at/for?
