Any ideas regarding this problem aside from changing the batteries in the transmitter?

You can check the batteries in the remote by holding the unlock button down for a few seconds. If you can see a red light flash in the small red plastic window adjacent to the key swivel point the battery should be good.

I don't think the smart keys used in the newer body style (post 140 coupe) will work.

i had the same problem see there is a kind of a vacume pump or a compressor under the right side back seat the problem is from it you can fix but it would be better if you change it
