Next generation S coupe discontinued?

Hi all

I have heard rumors that the next generation S-class will be sedan-only, meaning the coupe and convertible will be removed. It is quite sad as the S-class coupe is for me the ultimate. It has everything - looks, interior, performance, comfort, luxury, tech, etc.

Does anyone know if this is only a rumor or has it been approved? I heard the next gen SL will be offered with a choice of soft top or fixed roof(coupe) to replace the S-class coupe. The next gen SL will also be 2+2, which further indicates it will replace the S-class coupe.

EDIT: after doing some research on the german forums.....they don't seem to suggest so. One of the articles actually confirms that next gen S-class will be like current - offerd in LWB, coupe, and convertible, and AMG.

The S-class Cab is confirmed to go away and so is the S-class coupe. Refreshed models are not on the roadmap. The SL will becomes the S-class level convertible while maintaining the SL moniker. Originally the SL always had that position anyway...

The coupe while beautiful did not have sufficient sales in the US or in China. The current coupe will stick around in its face-lifted format though, probably for a year or so while the W223 sedan is out.

The wildcard is the EQ series, acceptance and commercial success as MB will have to sink significant resources into the EV segment. Slow selling models will have a hard time staying of the chopping block...

Understandable, but sad IMO.

Very very sad indeed. So the S-cabriolet will be replaced by the SL. What will replace the beautiful S-coupe?

Is it true the next gen SL will be offered in a fixed roof/coupe body style, thus replacing the S-coupe?

EDIT: if you look at the below link, it confirms that there will be a coupe, cab, and LWB versions(last paragraph). (The whole thing is in German)

I have seen the note at the end of the article but wouldn't consider that qualified information. It is actually incorrect in regards to the cab.
We know that the timing for a coupe was always a year behind the sedan but unless it is on the road map it doesn't happen. So at this point I don't see a coupe at all.

I would make my buying decisions based on what I see and like. Hard to tell the future, especially with change of leadership at MB, EV's and short-terms emissions compliance requirements in Europe.

So Wolfman, is the roadmap always 100% accurate and ok to follow? As in, if it is not there, then it will not be made, 100%. And if it IS there, it will be made, 100%, no matter what?

Confirmed roadmaps by MB, absolutely.
But at this point not everything is public.
It can easily be that a coupe will be introduced in 2022 or later. There maybe some changes in dates.

If you are looking for some guarantee that MB will or will not produce a coupe 2 years from now, you will simply not get that info from anyone. So far there is just no info other than the current coupe is one the chopping block.

Albeit beautiful, the coupes have never been financially successful.
These days, car manufacturers chase any opportunity to make money with niche models and the change to EV has huge implications for German car manufacturers.
They are stupid simple to build and only take a fraction of resources to produce.
It is said that there are about 250 thousand workers too many in the German automotive sector if switched to EV’s. These are high income specialist jobs.

Along with huge investments in EV they have bigger fish to fry than invest in developing cars that don’t sell well.
Just my opinion.

Thanks Wolfman

It is sad that car manufacturers always seem to chase money. I mean they are a business so it is perfectly fine to do this, it is their goal as a business. But.....Im just saying they shouldnt be forgetting the types/body types that are not doing so well just because financially they are not doing well. I wish they would remember that their true fans most likely are actual car enthusiasts who prefer coupes and convertibles, etc. I am sure back in the 19xx or so, they didnt care about the biggest market for them (China), all they did was they focused on producing beautiful, stunning cars, and the people will automatically be attracted......

But yes, you are right that I cannot get any guarantee. Best to enjoy what we have now and face whatever happens

Having had two SLs and two S63 Cabs, they're in different leagues. The new SL will be AMG tuned, and too much of a racer for the luxury buyer.
I think MB will still need a halo car above the SL, and the Maybach Vision 6 Coupe/Cab will likely be that car in a few years, as soon as they get their BEV platform in full production.
