Location of the Sending Unit for Tach

I purchased my car without a working tach and have now decided that I would like to be observing the engine RPMs (Yeah - I know it is a diesel, but still!).
The old owner told me that he had a fan belt break which not only took out the wiring but also the sending unit(!) for the tach. So me (a newbie to Benz) am now looking in front of the motor for a possible empty whole for the sending unit or for bits and pieces of what once was one - but am coming up with nothing.

So I am a bit lost here and hence am asking for some advice.

a) Where exactly on the motor does the tach gets its signal? (the TDC sensing unit, or something?)
b) Where might one get one? To my knowledge - junk yards around here ain't got no Benzes!

Thanks in Advance!
