83 M-B 300 SD 170K miles
How do I test the glow-plugs/relay??
My '83 300 SD for the first time is having a hard time starting!! I checked the glow-plugs like I would have on a Ford or Chevy. They all (5) checked out OK! How do I check out the relay??
I bought this car new. I just went thru the file, No mention of timing chain! No recomendation, or caution!! Is this a new thing? Or is this one of those things that would have been done long ago.. If I had been doing the factory Recomended Service Program!! (The Local M-B dealer is also the Buick stealer)
I appreciate your thoughts on this... in advance

How many miles? I forget how to measure timing chain stretch on the 617 but it is real simple to do while you have the valve cover off to adjust the valves. I think 5 degrees of stretch is the limit but check me on that. Usually a chain is good for about 300k on one before it stretch's to much.
Is the glow plug light coming on on the dash when you turn the key? If not check the 80amp strip fuse in the box right the drivers side head light.
If you want to find out how to check the chain for stretch do a search over at Mercedesshop I am sure someone has posted it before.
