89 420 se speed problem

got given this few months back ... was driving ok back from just failing its mot to be stored on my drive and as i put my foot down it accelerated and then dropped to silly speed such as 10 mph, wouldnt rev above 2000.

i changed the air temp sensor and weyhey! revs right up in netural or park, as soo as i start driving it wont go above 30mph, no matter what i do, even if i stick it in 2nd or 3rd ....

previous to the first problem here it was running fine, all be it a little lumpy as with any old car not run for a while, changed all plugs leads coil etc... cleaned it out, new air filter etc... and took it for a test on my mates private area and befor ei knew it was up to 60.

i would have thought replacing the air temp would allow this to happen again, but is there anything else i need to check reset replace etc...?

many thanks in advance.

Matt

ps just thought, little white blue smoke from exhaust on revving up .... valve stem seals going i think, could this be a problem?

Perhaps clogged fuel lines? The engine does not require much power to rev without a load, seems like it just is not producing as much power as it should.
