Uh I think the 420sel already has the double chain the only one that had the single chain was the 1980-to 84 380sel/se/sec/sl in the United States

1984 was the 1st year for the double row chain and nickle/chrome head bolts

In the 420SEL, from the beginning. The 380SEL/SEC OTOH, about 1983 and all previous ones should have been upgraded free.

If your info is correct, that is very interesting. I've always been under the impression that the non thread removing head bolts were first intruduced with the 420, 560 models. I thought all the 380 and 500 models had the early head bolts. Thanks for the update. I had to use that jig and tap all 36 of those suckers on a 380 once. I wouldn't do it again.

Maybe first year for the 380 was 1984, but my 84 500SEC euro has the old styled drill them over head bolts.

And yeah could you imagine drilling with out the Jig?

I saw a cob knobber do it once without a jig, but this is the same guy who has a water spiggot under the hood of his 300DT for a heater control valve. You need the jig, because the holes are not straight. They are at a one degree angle.
