Thinking of buying a 1989 560 SEL

Hi-
I am a newbie to both this forum and Mercedes in general. I have really become enamoured with the 560 SEL. I have driven several lately and have my eye on one in particular. I have befriended a Mercedes mechanic here in my hometown, who happens to be German for what it's worth. He has thouroughly inspected the car and says it is mechanically very sound and that the interior just needs some TLC.

It has 150,000 miles. Charcoal gray w/gray leather interior. I would rate its exterior a 9.5 out of 10. Very straight and clean with a brand new paint job that was done very well. Tires are good. The interior leaves a little to be desired.... some cracking of the front seat leather.... some sun damage to the tops of each vinyl door..... but the dash is perfect. The passenger headrest does not work, neither does one rear window. Sunroof is in good working condition.

The windshield wipers seem a little "funny" to me, but maybe it's because I am not used to Mercedes wipers. The best way I can describe their movement is they "flop" back and forth.... they don't seem very rigid in their movement. (hope that makes sense)....

He is asking $4900..... comments? suggestions?

Thanks very much, looking forward to owning a 560 SEL one day soon!

Jim

1st thing read the Buyer's Guide at MBCoupes:

http://www.mbcoupes.com/

Get a PPI done (Pre-Purchase Inspection).

The price isn't bad for a pristine SEL, but you say this one has a poor interior (and the miles are a little high for the price).

At the moment it's a buyers' market for high-mileage SELs, so you should be able to find better examples at that price range

agreed, and watch out for the bottom corners of the rear windows. if there is hazing, it could be a sign of a leak. the car sounds like it would be a great ride, but not for that price. depending on colors, 3000 would be more appropriate.

It changes all the time
For that kind of money, I'll drive one out to you from California, and pick up a couple thousand for my time. If it were me, I'd opt for a 420. Less junk to break and if you buy a late one, you'll even get a leather wrapped steering wheel. You can buy the rear foot rests at a wrecking yard.
