Sirius Radio Upgrade??
Hi Guys... I just became the proud new owner of a 1987 420 SEL. Its perfect in almost every way with only 95,700 miles on it. Arctic White with Palamino leather, my question is regarding the stereo, which is the original Becker Grand Prix. How will adding a Sirius receiver affect the original system? I would like to keep the car as original as possible, and can live without a cd player, but I threw out all my cassettes in the late eighties. LOL

Don't know about the Sirius radio but I own a 1988 560SEC and took out the Becker radio and replaced it with a Alpine just so I could have a CD player. Didn't have any problems with the sound. Matter of fact, the bass is much better because the Becker system is very limited.

You can most likely have Becker install an auxiliary input jack for you to get the sound to go through your radio. You'll still need to mount your Sirius receiver someplace like the ashtray so you can tune channels and see the screen.

Thanks Kent, I like the idea of an auxillary plugin, I want to keep the car original. I'm just not sure if a 21 year old stereo system is adequate now!

Personally, I'd ditch the Becker. You WON'T miss it after it's gone. You can always keep it in a box if you ever want to put the car back to original.
As for the Sirius, there is a wonderful spot to mount it under the passenger side footwell, next to the factory alarm module. I'm talking about the type that is a box only and interfaces to a compatible radio, which is what you want.
I've had good luck with my Clarion. It's Sirius compatible, so no need for the extra display and buttons. The Sirius box fits under the passenger footwell cover perfectly, and the only indication you have that it's installed is the antenna on the roof.
Be careful with how you run the antenna wire. Don't compromise the rear window seal, which is already a weak spot on W126 chassis.
If you really want an improvement, ditch the factory speakers and go with MB Quart. They really are damn good speakers, and appropriately German.
If you're ever near Tallahassee and wanna check out my setup, give me a shout.
Cheers!
