How do you remove an accelerator pedal on a W126?
Can anyone give me step-by-step detailed instructions on how to remove the accelerator pedal on a '88 300SEL? (W126 of course). I have tried and tried and tried. Still cant get it off. Tried to remove myself, couldnt do it. Then I printed out directions I found on the internet and it wont come off. It says to "compress" the clip at the bottom and I did and nothing happened. I need to drive this car early in the AM. I cant even get the pedal to pull up off of the rod, so I wonder if my pedal is even broken? Someone told me my pedal was broke, because the pedal was hard to push down and sometimes it will get stuck.
I wonder now if perhaps the linkage is bent? I dont see how though, I never had it over 1/2 way down. It is now probably broken now because of the way I have been jerking on it.
Thanks

Your symptoms sound just like how the pedal was in my 500SEL shortly before it broke. The clip at the bottom is really easy to get out, you need to pull the mat out of the way and pull the carpet up. Now since my pedal broke off all I had was a piece of plastic to pry off the throttle rod and used pliers for that. To get a new pedal on I found rather challenging at first but then noticed if I first slid it on sideways then turned it after it was on the rod it was a much easier task to install. Perhaps that method I used for installing could be reversed for removing.

you need to get a can of wd-40 to your linkage every 6 months and it will keep the pedel from being so stiff as well as keep it from wearing out so fast.... but like snipe said take the mats out first and the bottom of the pedal snaps into the floor and just twist and pull it off and put it back on the same way

At what juncture are you spraying lubricant? The linkage under the hood or where the gas pedal connect to the floor?
