300SDL Turbo wired open?

I regret that my first post must be so "off"

I just bought an 87 300SDL on ebay and drove it 600 miles home. Drive train seems good but VERY poor power output. No blow-by noted cold or at op temp, starts right up. Loud at idle but quiets right off idle and runs smooth. No power, it was obvious to me on the drive home that the turbo was offering little or no boost.

WHY, why I ask, would someone wire the wastegate open with utility wire? is there something Im missing here? this defies explaination, Im resisting the urge to cut it and test drive, there must be something I dont know about this turbo system? Im not sure but I think I have seen this done on another diesel but I cant immagine why?

Maybe not relavant but there is a bit of "loudness" from the front of the engine at idle, sounds like a really loud tapping but goes away right off idle, under load or not. Timing chain make noise like this?

Thanks for responses.

timing chain will rattle if the guides are broke and if it is rattling then you need to have it checked as well as the guides and as far as the waste gate being wired open i have never heard of it i have heard of by passing the over boost sensor to get more boost and power.. but never wiring open the wast gate... also the loud tapping can also be caused by the vales and if it is the case they just need to be adjusted it happens like every 100,000 miles or so

also try taking the wire off the waste gate... i just looked up online and it was wired open to keep the turbo from spooling up which in turn could mabe give better fuel mileage not sure but the waste gate is controled by vacuum so make sure you dont have any vacuum leaks
