No start after changing spark plugs/wires/disributor/rotor

No start after changing spark plugs/wires/disributor/rotor
My dad's 1987 420 SEL has been running really bad lately (have to floor it to get it going). I decided that since the maintenance hasn't been done in a while to change the Spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor cap and rotor. I bought Bosch Platinum Plus spark plugs and Duralast brand distributor, ignition wires and rotor.
After changing everything, the car wouldn't start. I did put the wires in the same order as I removed them... look at my 'diagram'...

I then put back the old rotor, distributor and wires and still no start. The rotor is turning (not in same position as it was in when installed) and the motor does TRY to crank over. The ONLY wire that was unplugged was connected to a long cylinder piece about 2" diameter with VDO written on it. The wire harness has "1 2" written on it. I tried reversing that lead and still no start.
What could be causing this?
