Sluggish acceleration

I have a 1989 300SE with 159K miles. Over the past month I've been having some problems with sluggish acceleration and little to no response when I push the pedal. It's like running through molasses all of a sudden. When I push it, the car accelerates very slowly. Even when I try to floor it, I initially get no response. For about 5-10 seconds of putting the pedal to the floor, there is still no response. Then, after these 5-10 seconds, the car gradually responds and accelerates. When this is not happening, i.e. when accelerates normally, the fuel economy drops. Any ideas? Thanks!

My fathers 300SE had a similar symptom. Turns out one of the spark plugs was bad and it went away when we replaced it. However, there could be several other causes for this, but just sharing this if it helps
