Need advice - when buy '90 420 SEL?
Hi guys. I have a CLK 320 and an R 350. I know nothing of the 420 SELs other than they're a long body S class with a 4.2 litre aluminum engine, I think the last year for them was '90 or '91 prior to the redesign. I have a chance to buy one with 100,000 miles on it, white, and in pretty good shape with the original Becker radio in the trunk - probably around $6500, maybe less.
Can you tell me the watch out for items? Timing chain? It's had brake work and appears to be leaking a bit of brake fluid on the front wheel. Also heard a bit of tappet noise upon initial start, which didn't repeat when warm. Seems to ride beautifully. Can I go wrong? I'm guessing probably not.

6500 sounds like a lot of money for a car ticking and leaking. Move on and find a good one at that money.
ps - the cars are great, and just about everything can be a do-it-yourself repair. No need to spend big money at a dealer for service.

honestly if the car only has 100,000 on it u should negotiate price down if its a private seller and BUY IT! if its leaking brake fluid not a big deal new calipers are like $100 but make sure engine is in good shape, ive had mine for a while never had any problems
