560 block helicoiling

Hi
I was putting the heads I've rebuilt back on my 560 engine yesterday when two of the bolts (the long ones that go through the cam towers) sheared the block's threads.

Any idea where I beg, borrow or steal the plate mentioned in the MB manual for redrilling the holes? Are helicoils okay or should I use solid inserts? Finally, has anyone tried this?

Cheers

Will

I've not had your problem, but if you have enough meat to use a solid insert like a Keensert, I'd use it.

I've not had much luck with helicoils, and use Keenserts when I can.

Will[/QUOTE I rented the tool set to do my 380 SL block, hand drill all (you really need to have the engine out to do it right) Tap all holes then install the inserts---skrew up one and you buy a complete set---not for the faint of heart. GRIMSTONE.

Quite a few:)
I have the tool jig etc for doing Timeserts, they are more labour intensive but once they are in they are In!

As Grim said, you REALLY want the engine out to do timeserts..helicoils are a Lot easier to install.
