Cracked head
What concerns should I have about buying an 87 SDL with approx 175k but only 20k on the rebuilt engine. Seller says engine was rebuilt because the head was cracked, which I understand the SDL's were prone to do. He says he has the receipt to show the work was done by a Mercedes mechanic. Should the rebuilt engine put me at ease or are there other issue's I should expect after a cracked head?

He is asking approx $5500 (cant remember precise amount of the top of my head). Although I had my wife call yesterday to get the vin and haven't got a return call. I also noticed he had an ad for the car back in June and its being advertised again in Sept. I guess that isn't necessarily a red flag but it seems a bit unusual.

MBWorld Fanatic!
Just keep always a eye out for temps even a newer head.Any aluminum head can warp if overheated or engine washed when engine hot.I wash all engines cold.Otherwise engine should see 660,000 miles or more.

^ agreed !
$5500 isn't bad, any pictures ?
It is a bit weird that it was posted so many times, but in todays economy people aren't buying old Mercedes diesels unless you love them like us !

I'd give the link to the Craigslist ad but he never returned my wife's call and the ad was canceled. So I have moved onto another prospect. I'll post pictures if that goes through. No cracked head and less miles.

Here is an 86 300SDL w/123,500 miles I bought for $4500. I drove 2/3 way across country to get it home which was crazy
, but it is not in too bad of shape (body and interior) it came with extensive service records and I didn't pay an arm and a leg (Even though someone will post that they got an immaculate SDL locally with extensive records for 2k).
