1989 300 SE
Unhappy 1990 300se Help!!!

Just joined and have really enjoyed reading all postings the last few months. The time has finally come for me to request assitance.
I have a 1990 300 SE with 6 cyl. engine. The A/C has gone out and I am wondering: 1. Does anyone know a really good MB AC mechanic in the Houston, Texas area. If I can't find one I am tempted to (find a decent mechanic) and have him replace the entire AC system and purchase the parts myself. Should I ...a) go and purchase the parts on an online auction service? does anyone know a reputable parts dealer or b) is it cheaper to fly to germany and purchase the parts there? ( I will be in europe in a few weeks)

You're going off the deep end with replacing all of the parts - you have no comprehension of how big a job it is to replace the evaporator. Go have it looked at by a good A/C shop and see what's wrong.

I think you'll find that replacing the entire A/C system will put a huge hole in your bank account. Start off with the easy stuff first. Do you see bubbles in the sight glass? If so, you need freon. Are all of the vacuum pods working? Remove the glove box lining and check the recirculation pods. If they aren't working, then you're constantly trying to cool fresh air.

With the middle button pushed on your climate control, does the air come out of your center vents, defroster, or both? If the defroster pod fails, not much air will come out of the center vents, but a LOT of air will be coming out of the defroster vents.

There's a vacuum connector in your console behind the pushbutton unit. Test all of the connections to see if they hold vacuum.

Is the pushbutton unit working? How about the blower motor? There's quite a few little things that you can check that aren't too expensive to fix.
