1990 560 SEC (modified), SLK55, CLK500
500 came first. 560 and 500 has essentially the same block, similar heads. both are 117 series engines. The 500 was developed into 560, and the 380 was developed into 420. 560 was primarily meant for US market because after emissions controls, the 500 was really wimpy.

Also, 560 came with more options, such as almost standard rear hydraulics and heated seats.

benzworld.org has more info on w126,

Mbcoupes.com has about all the info on the SEC you will ever be able to use, and more.

Specifications for the engines are for the 500: 231hp on pre 86 models...86 and onwards 223, 245, 252 or 265 depending on version (G-kat, non-cat, ECE and all that..can't really sort it out myself).

The 560 had 272hp until -87 without cat. The G-kat 242. The ECE-version (continued to -87) was rated at 300hp. After some minor modifications to the 560-engine, -87 and onwards gave 279hp with cat...and 300 without cat.

All these numbers go for the Euro engines that is.

Yeah, these North American engines are kinda weak. De-tuned way too much.

Funny... My '89 560SL seems much closer to 279 then 230. I also drove an '86 560SL and the engine seemed a bit "soft" for power.

You do say that with the catalyst after '87 power was increased in all V8 models. The US versions have the catalyst. Therefore, the US 560SEL made after 1988 has 279 hp?

Gee, I hope so. When I looked up the value for my 560SL, it said there was a difference of 50 horses between years. 277 SAE net hp vs 227 SAE net hp for previous years.

It certainly feels peppy enough to make that claim.

Is it a US version you drive? If it is, the car should have 227 hp...

But I'm not really familiar with the US versions of the 560 engine. None of those made more than about 240 horses I think though. The max power comes up lower in the rpm band...that's why...the torque should be about the same...but the euro versions continue to pull for a longer time. Since the torque is about the same the engine might feel like it's also making more horses than it does.
The euroversion got 279 hp -88 and onwards...300 without cat. What was made to the US version I really don't know...

The euro versions of the 560SL I've seen, differ pretty much in hp numbers...ranging from about 230hp to 300hp. Most of the ones I've seen for sale though at the German market has had around 230 or 240 hp. Why I don't know.
