new here, need help on 80's-90's 300 series

i was told you guys pretty much know all there is to know about what i dont know :p i want to buy a mid-eighties or early 90's 300 series mb. but it would be my first car. i like them because they're relatively well kept, reliable (so i've heard), got all the features i want, not too quick so i wont have to worry about speeding, and they're safe... but my question is on upkeep and practicality. is it going to cost me a fortune to fix/maintain? and is it a practical car for upstate ny? not a good idea for a first car? any help is greatly appreciated. thanks

edit: i think this is the right place, is it not? there's a lot of forums on here, i dunno which one it is. sorry

The old MBs are slow to accelerate, but once you get going, they haul. It can be easy to cruise around 75+ MPH and not know it. Therefore you can easily get a ticket if you don't watch out

Depending on the kinds of repairs needed, you can spend lots of money. If you're mechanically-inclined, you can do lots of work yourself. Parts are available online at significant savings as opposed to purchasing them at a dealership or independent shop. Also, you should look for reputable MB dealerships and indie shops before purchasing a vehicle. Never take a Mercedes to a gas station for repairs! Lots of special tools and knowledge are required to work on these things.

Good luck with your search!
