speaker sizes in an 88 300SEL

Hi Guys,

just bought an (Australian) 1988 model 300SEL, and i am looking to replace the factory speakers in the car (the head unit has already been changed)..

i was wondering what size speakers fit in the factory speaker locations? the only info i could find was on crutchfield (in the US) which stated the fronts where 3.5" and the rears it was a little unclear but the system thought it was 5.25"..

from reading the forums it seems people go for 6.5" in the rears? do they fit in the pods or do they require modification?

also it seems like the front speakers look pretty tough to get out? how much of the dash would you need to remove and how do you go about doing that (any websites about this?)

Also any ideas on the effectivness of putting a sub in the boot, i have heard that since the fuel tank is between the seat and the boot it is pointless, is this true?

Thanks guys in advance for all your help

Kent

Speaker swap

You are correct about the sub in the trunk. It is next to impossible to hear the bass with the sealed trunk(boot) I have seen people remove the back deck where the safety kit and the storage are and build a custom box to let the sound into the cab. It is probablly best to consult with a audioin specialist to have this done. It might cost some bucks, but it is worth it.

With regard to the front speakers and rears, I would recommend taking it to someone who does this professionally. I used JL audio in my Benz.

i drive them all, fast and hard
in my 85 500sel, the car uses 4 by 6's all over, i just put in 4 by 6 eclipse speakersin front, and in the back i disconnected the 4 by 6's and put in 6 by 9 eclipses in the storage and FA spots, i took out the actually containers and the had the speaker go thru the cover lid and sealed it shut, in the trunk i got a 12 inch sealed box, it bangs,
