Test Drove a 1984 300SD Turbodiesel today

It's a W126 with 330,000 miles. It runs a little rough at idle and when I popped the hood it was shaking but not excessively. I've seen much worse! There was visible oil leaks mainly around the valve cover and he stated that he adds a quart of oil to it every 1,000 miles. There was only a small spot on the driveway where he keeps it so I'm guessing that it's burning it.

The transmission seems to clunk through the gears but once in 4th it runs smooth. I wasn't able to drive it as I have a broken right foot and the owner kept flooring it to show me how much power it had. I asked him not to gun it and let it go through the gears normally. It still shifted a little rough through the gears but not as bad as before.

It's been well maintained and has all the service records. My concern is how many miles can I expect to get out of this engine and are there any other problems that I should be aware of with a 33 year old car? He was originally selling the car for $2,500 but we negotiated it down to $2,000.

Don't have one yet :(
Yeesh! that is quite a lot of miles, BUT that is not to say that you can't get some more out of it. Have you made a list of the necessary repairs you need to make to ensure that it won't break down on you? If you give it some TLC you should be able to go up another 50-75K miles I would think. How often do you plan to drive it?

Is there a list of necessary repairs somewhere for these or is it just based car by car on it's condition?
