Hello,

It appears as if there was a minor screw up with the paperwork. What is the surefire way of telling if this car is a 1982 or 1983? Is there a specific digit in the VIN? Where is the production date located physically on this vehicle.

The tenth character, a letter, is the model year. Example: J is 1988. I think if you work backwards (i.e., I=1987, H=1986, etc.), you will find yours.

Production date is listed in the fahrzeugdaten in the back of the service booklet and on printed tags hidden in the vehicle. Check under the passenger footwell carpet on the plastic wire duct.

does this mean this is an 81 or an 82 model year car? The VIN character corresponds to 81 using your convention
