Transmission Problem on a 1983 300 SD Turbo Diesel

I have a couple questions for my new project car

1) The tranny is kinda messed up... It will go in reverse just find, however it will no go in drive. The motor just revs up.... it used to just rev up and all of a sudden kick in... now it just revs up. Anyone know why? It's an auto tranny...

Thanks all...

BTW: its an 83 300sd turbo diesel

The transmission might have suffered the B2 piston failure common in W126. There is a good site which details the problem and how to replace the piston. I can dig it up if you can't find it.
