Om617 operating temperature question

Hello fellow Benz lovers I have recently purchased my first Mercedes it's a 1983 300 SD with 141000 miles meticulously maintained by the previous owner who ordered the car and drove around Europe on vacation then had it shipped back to the states. The only thing wrong with the car is that the stereo won't turn on (fuse ok under hood). Mainly I am curious about what the normal operating temperature of the om617 should be. It has gotten as high as 100c and fluctuates quite a bit by that I mean erratically on the guage. I'm thinking it's the temp sensor. What do you think?
Thanks for any replies

Welcome! Please post a pic of your M-B. Around 200 deg F, according to this: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/...emp-om617.html

If the temperature gage is fluctuating, I would first check to see the coolant is filled to the proper level. Next is to look for coolant leaks. Then try to detect if coolant is being consumed by the engine. The gage may indeed be faulty. The coolant level and consumption checks will help diagnose the situation before targeting the gage/sensor.
