Steering Column

My son and I installed a rebuilt steering gear in my 83 300SD. The gear is 3 turns lock to lock. I made an incorrect assumption that the new gear would come centered but it came turned to one lock, therefore my steering column is 180* out of sync. I am sure the column is from a W123 not a W126. I am old and my son is no spring chicken so I do not have the heart to ask him to go thru the ordeal of taking the gear out to turn the wheel 180. My question is, is there a easy way to move the column up far enough to disconnect it from the gear and turn it to the proper position?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Steve
