I found it rather unusual that people are not upgrading/restoring their 560's. So this thread is dedicated to all the gear heads, to give you guys a heads up on the upcoming transformation of my baby. I'll keep you guys posted on each project, with a follow-thru write up with complimentary pictures for the dummies and mechanically challanged.

Okay, I have a 86 560SEL and the only thing I did was replaced the factory headunit with an Alpine and a navigation system. The rest are original except the normal wear and tear stuffs like the brake pads, rotors, timing chain, water pump...etc.

have you considered upping your suspension with the Blistein shocks and Eibach springs? I'm gonna get em as soon as I'm done with the engine.

W126 500SEC and 560SEL
My 1989 560 has 200,000 miles on the clock and still goes like a rocket.

It is currently blue, with black replacement wings and 16" early Penta AMG 5 spoke alloys in gold...

I have replaced the front shocks with Bilstein due to leak on the original one.

I believe Bilstein is the OEM for Mercedes. You just don't see them due to the shocks are inside a tube for whatever reason. As the ride is no different from factory's. Honestly I cannot remember what it was 18 years ago. But the noises are gone now and the car runs like new again.

I have a 560 SEL I'm working on right now. I went to two junkyards today and scrapped some really good parts for it...got a new rear view mirror and some other stuff. Unfortunately it still has a lot of work that needs to be done. If anyone knows of a good source online that gives some help to repairing this car I'd love to know. For example I know the fuse box is in the hood but I think there must be another somewhere in the car...I blew the fuse to the right set of speakers in the car and that fuse isn't anywhere under the hood.

Are you sure about that? When you find it , let me know. Check your speakers/wires also.

On the 560SEL the rear speakers are run thru modules that are located behind the rear backrest cushion. The connections can occasionaly come loose. Check that first and eliminate the need to look elsewhere.

Good luck.

I have a 1989 420SEL stock with the exception of the sound system. It has 33K on it.
I just went through the suspension renewing the ball joints, the caster units or body mounts, shocks and control arms and some other parts.
Even with low miles this is an excellent thing to do. The ride is incredible. I thought it rode well before but ... invest the money.

1986 Mercedes Benz 560 SEL
New For Me

I have recently been given a 1986 Mercedes Benz 560SEL (120,000miles). However, as a student it is not in my best interest to keep it. It is hard to sell it because it was a gift from my grandfather and it has been his car for the past 18 years. I am interested in selling it in spring of 2006 and was wondering if anyone had an good tips to selling it. Because it was my grandfathers he could afford to replace any parts when needed, and keep it garage kept. I am complimented all the time on it and believe it is worth more then the price some sources are telling me. Please if anyone knows any good pricing systems, or a good way to sell it, it will be much appreciated.
