2008 C300 4Matic
Advice on Purchase

Good afternoon everybody,

I currently own and drive a 2008 C300 4Matic with 187k miles. I’ve done a ton of preventative maintenance on it, however it still needs motor mounts. I have the ability and the means to do it, but I know it will take me the better part of a weekend to do it and I’m extremely busy so it will take a while for me to be able to get the time, as well as it’s a major PITA job for those who are familiar.

That being said, I have the opportunity to make an even trade for a 1985 500SEL with 79k miles that supposedly only needs a passenger side mirror and that’s it. He claims it needs absolutely nothing else and that his grandfather owned it since new.

I’ve heard these cars are incredibly reliable all around with no major issues, but I figured I would come on here and ask the real owners. What problems should I look for when I check the car out, what kind of fuel economy should I expect in general (I currently get around 24mpg), and am I making a huge mistake here? I do all my own work on my vehicles, I’m not a professional so I definitely learn as I go but I’ve built a very solid base over the last few years. I commute around 50 miles round trip a day minimum for work and wherever else I need to go, so if this car won’t be a good daily driver no matter what I do, please be brutally honest. I’ve got a very big weak spot for these W126 and I fully acknowledge that lol.

If you need parts on the older car good luck...

so start looking around before you do a trade if you can buy brake parts, plugs, wires, all filters, suspension parts, switches etc.
