Well any plastic radiator will crack eventually, the cheaper one in my Toyota died at the 10 year mark. The radiator in my SDL failed in almost the same way after 17 years though.

The OE radiator is Behr, they use plastic tanks. You should also replace your expansion tank to get the new one with the silica pack. Use MB coolant and change it every two years and you should get at least 15 years out of a Behr.

The aftermarket Nissens ect are junk only buy one if you plan on selling the car in another year or so.

Now option two is to get a custom all aluminum radiator made.

These guys made a nice one for a member of MBshop with a 300D. Cost him about $400 which is about twice as much as a new Behr. However if you happen to have an SDL since the Behr's are up to if not over $400 at this time a custom rad makes an attractive option.

im getting a custom made one for me now.. $400.. the contrstruction is copper tubing and tank but aluminum fins.. not bad if u ask me.. plus the builder is assuring it will out perform OEM...

ohh and my current OE radiator has needle tip like leaks almost all over it.. i refill 1quart or more coolant every morning!!!
