As you suggested, that was a little ambiguous. Therefore, this is a shot in the dark, but perhaps your MAF sensor or an O2 sensor is defective. Are you capable of reviewing the stored diagnostic codes?

Both of those failures are extremely common for any recent Mercedes.

I may be that your spark plug wires is causing the sakes. Disturbutor cap is also known to be at fault.I was also a victim of what you have discribed above.Everything is all good when restart the car, but as soon as you floor it and come to a stop the car begins sake.

Out of curiosity, did that problem ever trigger your CEL? The illuminated CEL is precisely why I would suspect a defective MAF or O2 sensor.

whats teh CEL, and how would i access diagnostics codes?

the car shakes at any startup and when u come to a stop, restart makes no difference.

sparkplugs have been changed i think at the 80K

service called and says it was a shortage of the ignition coil. and that the car wasnt running on all cylinders. 380bucks for parts and labor

does this seem right/reasonable price

thanks

Depends on the fault code. I would believe it if the fault code is a misfire for the particular cylinder that had the faulty ignition coil. I'm assuming you're talking about your 1998 S500, which will have the OBDII system and which will not have "an" ignition coil but one coil for each spark plug, 8 total. You can ask to see the faulty ignition coil and to have them show you that it is faulty. I believe some simple resistance tests with a simple multimeter will show whether a coil is OK or not. You'll have to check me on that.

I might also suspect the air mass meter (MAF) as someone has already mentioned. Usually one gets codes related to O2 sensors or fuel trim at its lean or rich limit.

It's all in the codes.
