S CLASS Servicing
I took the car to my local MB dealership who suggested changing the gearbox oil which they did. This has not however made a difference. The oil level is obviously good having been changed but the problem remains. No abvious oil loss and engine pressure is always good.
I just wondered if there were any techies out there that have had this problem. I feel everytime I take the car in for servicing that they are guessing rather than knowing.
Car is S280 (W140) 1996.
just a thought. The autobox will not change up until the catalytic converter has warmed up.... it`s programmed to do that to protect the cat. With my S280 it pulls away in 2nd stays in 2nd for maybe half a mile and then slips into 3rd and then 4th very quickly and smoothly.
If I park up and then get into the car and drive off again this process is not repeated. If there is a longer time elapse the process is repeated as the cat needs to warm up again.
The car has done this ever since I got it two and a half years ago and once I knew what it was I relaxed and stopped worrying. Ask your dealer if it could be this.
BTW mine is a 1996 S280 with five speed auto.
Chris.
The thing that makes me wonder if this is so is that I don't recall it doing this when I first got it. If it hasn't caused you any problems in the last 2 years then I hope mine is the same. I think I'm going to start the car up and warm it up for 10 minutes then see what happens.
Thanks for taking the time to write, appreciated.
