Ok guys I for one have been one to say MB boys fa life,but I was over in the W220 Turf talking about the w220 saying its was the weakest of the S being around the shortest time and all and they then attack the w140 and how cheap they are now...i need some help guys our w140 are "Dino's" but they are alos the best built S ever....maybe overly built for the time(causing the bugs)but its still stands out better then ANY SCLASS ever..we need to take a stand for our rides...come W140 Brothers and take a STAND for our W140'S!!!

 

Just as you get defensive about your w140, how the hell do you think w220 owners would respond when you hijack their thread and rip on their cars. Not just one but all w220's???

 

A w140 is a nice car, but by no means any comparison to W220.... PERIOD.....
W220 is by far and away the most beautiful S class to date!

There's no need to get into a lather over it, the W220's just the straight up WINNER of this battle.

It's 500+ lbs heavier and SLOWER, has an EXTREMELY DATED LOOK (w140's looks Like a Bullfrog had sex w/Tank)) against todays NEWER BETTER MERCEDES it doesn't cut it....

Now don't get me wrong I still think the w140 by itself is a nice car but compared to the W220??Fa'GiddaBout'It

the thread was about the design of them,I NEVER said they werent a nice car,but apparently Mercedes agrees or they wouldnt be redesigning it after 7 model years..the w140 lasted 8 model years and the w126 lasted 10 model years..i never hated on the w220 my uncle has had a w220 they drive great,but sitting in a w140 and then sitting in a w220 you lose that mercedes feel. w140 might be heavier..but that shows how much more better built it is.

 

and it might be slower but lets add the weight to that w220 s500(not the s55)and see whos faster...let compare TRUE GERMAN built to American Built Mercedes..and about the body being outdated..look around pal Ford Thunderbird,Mustang,RR Phantom,Chrysler 300,Charger,Nomad,list goes on and on the boxy look is back ..retro look is back period in just about everything,from Shoes,Clothes, to CARS and TRUCKS. so its not really outdated in body design if they making cars look like the older cars...you might have a s55..and i drove a 06 a few months ago and dont get ME wrong I would LOVE to have one..but it doesnt have that Mercedes feel or look..it looks to American..the new w221 looks awesome.And i think MB made a HUGE Improvment to the S.again NY and THICKER im not hating on w220..they just dont feel like a TRUE GERMAN car,it has soo much American feel and appel to it,it rinks...i dont feel like i stepping in a GERMAN car in the w220,and i know most TRUE MB fans who respect the older days unlike the two of you who seem to want a benz for the "rich person,better then you" image.THE ONES WHO TRUELY love Mercedes and smile even when a old 300d goes by will tell you the Mercedes-Benz of today is nothing but sellout American made cars with our nameplate. and thats the TRUTH.

 

to all W220 lovers: you have a very, very good car, but the W140 was a GREAT car. i had one of these and the only word fit to describe it is "EPIC". it was huge, but actually handles very well - once you grasp how big it really is, it's easy to drive and very sharp - doesn't have the gadgets of the W220 but it shows what good engineering is all about. everything, and i mean everything, looks like it will last forever.

recently i sat on my W140 again (sold it to a friend) and i still love it! if you can get a nice clean example, i'd definitely go for it rather than a second-hand, pre-facelifted, W220.

but then again, i think i'd rather go for the W221 :p

A true enthusiast might tell you that the real test for a luxury car is not necessarily how well it is initially received, but rather how it tends to endure over extended periods of time. I've seen 2000 S500 models with low mileage selling for around $26,000. That's about $550 per month, which shouldn't at all be considered out of reach for anybody contributing to the W140 forum. After all, that's our maintenance budget! (I kid, I kid. Just trying to keep things light!)

Seriously, though, the W126, W140, and W220 models are all wonderful cars. They're also very different, although I will concede that the W220 was probably more of a departure from Mercedes-Benz tradition. I'll allow the capable minds here to decide for themselves whether or not that deviation was a beneficial one. It's amusing, however, that a W220 owner would disparage the styling of the W140, or vice versa; Bruno Sacco oversaw the design of all three bodies mentioned here.

As for performance, almost all Mercedes-Benz sedans have until very recently been considered powerful highway cruisers, not off the line street racers. And, while sitting in the rear of a W140, most people will tell you that it is a car built to be driven in. If you've never been chauffeured in a W140 S600, it is definitely a unique experience that is to be cherished.

Ultimately, it all comes down to a matter of preference. It's likely that a number of W220 owners will retain their cars instead of purchasing a W221, simply because they prefer something about it. Similarly, many W140 owners have decided that they wouldn't ever drive anything else, as have many W126 enthusiasts. Some people own one of each style, but I've found that it rarely has anything to do with their respective financial statuses. If you've purchased the car because you're compensating for low self-esteem -- not because you love the car -- then that money might have been better spent on therapy.

And, by therapy, I mean an SLR McLaren. :p

 

amen....i have told just about everyone i know if Mercedes were known as a poor mans car i would still drive it..im not rich by ANY means,but Mercedes owners need to remember the history of our great fleets,i feel like the new Benz owners who dont really know or respect the history(young kids,or celebrities who have made it)of Mercedes-Benz..at age 5 i feel in love with my uncles 81 (with 83 upgrades)500sel amg..it was Brown with Brown Leather and Brown AMG Wheels..its was awesome..it doesnt matter how old the Mercedes is if your a TRUE fan of there cars..I smile and wave to everysingle Mercedes i past..there needs to be that connection..New Mercedes Owners that our New to Mercedes try to out flash the Lexus Owners(who are the worst)..and theres NO need..there driving a Highend Toyota..there is No Highhend company for us..its Mercedes and allways will be.......well there is the Bach!!

 

w140 is a landmark of automotive history. 220 is nice but in a new way, it doesnt have a rich heritage look of the older models. I looks too japanese in my eyes. Lexus :LS 400 looks exactly like a w140 did back then.

w220 is a nice car, fast when in S55 and 600 models, but its lacking a bit of soul. The design is still awesome, but time will tell how it will last up.
Good desig gets better with time, like good wine. Example, 300sl Gullwing, Jag E type. Even 79 450sel. Mid 90s SL was not as good, but the new SL is a classic already, you can only imagine how it will look say in 15 years. The odder the car looks, more personality it has and w140 has it in spades.

Now we all know that a LS 430 is a much better car, mnore dependable, quieter, and flawless in design, but it has no sould, the current lexus model looks exactly like a W140, it looks like Lexus is just one model behind. I am sure the next one will look like a 220.

 

Now you have come to your senses. Remember you started all this crap buy insulting the W220 owners. I like the 140 and all of the benz's but I prefer the W220. The difference is that I do not insult others unless provoked. If you walk in with your guns blazing prepare to get shot. Have more respect for other members cars and you will make friends not enemys. Simple enough.

 

I went from a 97 LWB S500 to a 02 S55 AMG and damn the two are completly different monsters. Ill be honest the W220 will NEVER feel like the W140 when it comes to solidness and beauty. The W140 I believe was the last REAL S-class. The W220 you could say is not a redesign but a whole new evolution. Just my 2 cents and dont want any flame wars haha...

 

I raced a W220 S500 when i was stock and i only lost by one car length. On paper the W140 may not stack up but that doesnt mean it can't win in real life. i dont see why any W140 S500 couldn't keep up or maybe beat a W220. W140 are the last of the true handbuilt S-classes, they have a certain feel that lacks from the new ones. its hard to explain but we all know what it is.

I gotta say that you really made yourself out to be a big *** in the w220 forum and just about every "fact" you spewed was wrong.

 

only fact i got wrong was the w220 S was built here in US....every other fact is either MHO,or a fact of Truth from TIME Magazine..Can you really say Mercedes is in its best shape ever as a company??? The E class is one of the main problems(Time).They were built to fast and used cheap parts..the W220 looks like something from Japan or Ford built...why is Lexus having so much success??cuz there CURRENT flagship looks like a W140 and yet has near zero problems other then being boring...like i said you want FACTS on Mercedes??? Read Oct 5th issue of Time Magazine "Can Mercedes be a Star again"...Not everyone like what i say and thats ok..NY if you dont like me thats fine..but i have never attacked any1 personaly..its just a fact that MB has fallin and they hired a new CEO to bring them back..in 5 years MB will be back on top..i believe in it..if i didnt love MB i wouldnt have my wife or me have 14k gold mercedes charms(there small).i love MB but if im a *** then i guess thats how you feel or other feel about me...i will live with a few haters.

I bought the 1998 S600 for my wife's birthday in 2000 to replace her 1996 S500 (I have owned 13 S-class models since 1978). I have yet to find a suitable replacement and at this point the only thing that catches my interest is the 760Li sport. I am awaiting the arrival of the new w221 to see how it measures up
