Cool Wheel Vibrations

Hello,

I had similiar issue, replaced almost everything. Have you replaced the upper control arms also the steering damper and ball joints could cause an issue. I have found that all these parts need to be replaced anyways due to the weight of w140 body. Checking the wheel bearings and having a correct alignment ( on mercedes dealer seem to be able to due it correctly) done is always a good idea. If all this does not help, don't panic because Mercedes Benz never really found out why some w140 had these gremlins. I personally replaced all shocks, damper, steering links and bushings and control arms (upper and lower),steering box, tie rods, repacked the wheel bearings and got an alignment. The vibration finally went away, do not know what part eliminated it, some say repacking the wheel bearings make a difference.

Hollind, I solved my vibration problem by:

- Replacing the steering dampener (the old one had NO resistance for the first three inches of travel)
- Replacing the bent rims I discovered after repeated trips to the alignment shop

I should have figured a bent rim based on the wear on the dampener.

you check the steering damper keep your eye on the resistance and movement. and all the under chassis parts you pay attention, remember small free play it coz shaking & vibrate.

Its the car, the dealer replaced control arms, damper, redid the drive shaft and lotsa things under warranty. I did motor mounts, lower control arms, sway bar bushings. I got it to be minimal by using Bridgestone Turanzas, running them at 5lbs higher, and getting them road-force balanced. The problem went away in 95 when MB changed the springs lowered the car and other things, I have had multiple dealers look at it, no one has a clear fix and nothing ever came out in a service bulletin yet they all know about it.
