600SEC - just how fast is it?

Hello everyone,

I'm just about to buy my first 600SEC - a 1993 one in great condition. I'm very pleased about it. So that's why I've just joined the forum.

But I was talking to a friend in the pub, and something came up. We were wondering... If you take the 155mph limiter off (which I'm not planning to do), just how fast would it go?

Ah, right. So not that much faster. I thought it might be loads.

I have been told by someone I know who topped out a 600SEL when it was pretty much new, on the Autobahn that high 170's is about all you will get. The early models up to 1993 (I think) did not have the 155 kill joy.

Thanks to both of you. The one I'm buying (picking it up on Weds - can't wait) is a 1993 one, so it may not even have the limiter on it. I doubt I'm ever going to find out though - 155mph might be a bit much here.

High 170s is fast enough.... it's rather better than the 1991 Daewoo that was my first car when I moved here.

I think a 747 takes off at about 140 miles, so any faster than 155 and you might start to fly.

Hmm.. I don't think there's much risk of us taking off. The highest speed limit in HK is a short stretch with a 110km/h (70mph) limit, and there are cameras everywhere. So there's no need to look for a 600 flying overhead at the moment. It's more just an academic thing - it's nice to know that I can feel quietly superior to the triads in their Imprezzas and Evos.

All our Triads drive BMW and MB, some guy got shot outside a bar the other day, had a nice 540i as well.

MBs and BMWs tend to just be for normal people here, except for the occasional blacked-out S-class.

The junior triads have Imprezzas and Evos; the middle-management ones have Skylines; and the wannabes have ludicrously lowered 1990 Civics with exhaust pipes the size of dustbins.

I'll make sure my Kiwi friends don't buy any bargain 540is in the next few weeks then...
