W140 Too much hassle (for a 17yr old)

I'm contemplating an older W140 (post 1993 S420, or possibly W124 E420). I love the car, just not sure if a higher mileage (120-170k) model (probably a 420) would be too much hassle, and cost prohibitive (pretty handy DIYer, but not sure how DIY the W140's are.) Looking at something along the lines of this- http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...=&cardist=1076
Stupid auto trader links (wish I knew how to hyperlink)
Any light you could shed on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
-Zach

I got my 1993 300SEL at 18, it's not too much hassle you just have to have the cash or the parents to back the thing up.

Would you consider the car relatively simple to work on (or is it a mechanic only fixer?).

Um...things like plugs rotors dist caps etc can be done but alot of stuff requires getting under the car and with a car that size a proper lift and teh right tools are what you need, also what scares the crap out of me is breaking something thats exspensive to fix. If you know your DIY you sould be able to do alot of things myself for example I'm not too DIY inclined so I stay clear as much as possible unlesss it's really easy.

e320 - your repairs are going to depend on how it was taken care of in the past, so only you can judge that. But as far as DIY is concerned............ if your handy with working on cars go for it. The 140 is just an auto. Search out the best prices on parts as thats the biggest part of the the job. Every car has its own special issues. I have found with the get amount of knowledge & help on this sight I have been able to fix 95% of the things I needed to.

Drive On

The early 140, can be an expensive undertaking. They had new model issues and some quality issues, especially the AC which is common and the typical repair is $4000 dash comes out. The door close system, and Bose system fail. I have not heard much but engine and trans issues at 150 to 170 mi sounds in line, you can do a lot of wrenching, most of it you cant!
If you can find one with good service records it is great start.
