Autohas I think do a good 3rd party one, are you sure about that though being a 1997 it should have the newer updated wiring that is not prone to comming apart?

i am being told this will fix my problems by my mechanic.
i trust him, he is a certifies MB master mechanic with a very good reputation for honesty and ability to diagnose.

he had my car for 2-3 weeks and went thru it many times, replaced a few parts that needed to be done, but the fault codes are not consistent and all over the place, he inspected every code, and is being led in circles.
the problem started with my gas guege light flashing, normally this is ann indication of a loose or faulty gas cap.
i had it tested and it's ok, the code was for massive gas tank pressure leek, he replaced another part of the gas tank system as well and the problem still persists, check engine light comes on as well......
my mechanic is positive the engine harness must be breaking down and giving the faulty readings and cods.
if anyone has any thoughts i'm open to suggestions.

NZ BENZ is correct, 1997 will not have the "biodegradable" harness. The 1007 had no issues, only 1992-1995 had issues. Also fuel level sensor could be bad.
Not related but fuel filter (cheap fix) is good idea every 15k. I am sure your mechanic is honest, however you should seek a second opinion from another MB qualified mechanic.

The Codes activating the "check engine" light can be O2 sensor code, air pump code, misfiring code ect...I would suggest taking to another mechanic, it is NOT likely your harness. Ask for a "specific" breakdown of which codes are being pulled up, what means is the mechanic using to clear codes.

You should be able to examine the harness to see if it is or not, cut a small bit open and if it's not bad tape it back up.

thank you for the reply Gents.

i think i will go for a second opinion on that.
my mechanic did check the harness and did not find any cracked insulation any ware visible, he suspects it will be in the hot areas behind the engine.
i really dont feel like replacing the harness for $1500 ish,
got some new Benz shops to check out first

thanks again for the info and suggestions

i know one of the codes was for air pump, he did check the pump and activated it, the other code was for EGR valve, the care does not have one. he did find a broken hose from the valve cover to the throttle body, and replaced it, that may have given the falls EGR code.
he is using a Launch brand diagnostic computer with build in printed for diagnostics couples with MB manuals for reference. he uses the same tool to clear the codes.
