Best Year

Trying to get some research done, I want to make a purchase soon and I have been all over the forums.

Which year is the best year when it comes to the W140?

Meaning less problematic, prone to less things going wrong, which year did they get it right?

Did they have a facelift???

ANY INFO IS GREATLY APPRECIATED AND I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO SHARE THE DETAILS WITH ME.

Thanks for your help.

The 140 got a facelift in 1995, and all models had the 5 speed starting in 1996 (instead of the 4-speed). V12 models had ESP standard from 1997 (maybe 1996?) but it was optional on all models. I would be most concerned with finding one with ESP, it can save your life, or at least your car's.

I would reccomend one with ESP and the 5-speed transmission, year is not important. I will say that most important are dealer service records from day 1. Buy the best cared for car you can find, and continue to do the same.

'96 was the 1st year for the 5 speed trans, same as the SL.

A 98 - 99 would be my choice.

I have a 92 with 197,000 miles. I've had to replace alot of things on the car which is why you should only get one with service records to know what has already been done or you will have to be prepared to spend alot on repairs yourself. The 92-95 seem to have alot more little problems to me than the 96-99. I also have a 99 and it seems to be a much better built car. I have had no problems out of it.

Oh by the way my 92 also started having reverse problems which eventually led to the car not shifting out of first. Transmission had to be rebuilt. A friend did it for me for around $2000. Usually will cost more than this.

Wink

the 92 300se had a 5 speed tranny, it was the only model that did, i now have a 1999 s320 which is way better and nicer than the 92 also has a 3.2 liter engine and on the older w140 you must watch out for the ac evaporater which is a huge job....

+1.. I have a 95, and i have problems getting into reverse... 98-99 was the last year of the W140... all problems they had before, i assume would have been perfected by the last model....

best year

hi guys over here in the uk i have owned a 1994 s500 for almost a year and i have had no problems with here other than general servicing.
i have to say it came from a good source a club member/ mate of mine bought it from new. im only the second owner 99,000 miles when i got it its now done 106,000 it has full history and has had a good wedge spent on it over the years. it had just before i got it 4 new springs, 4 new tyres, self closing vacuum pump, front shockers, new discs/pads allround. and probably other bits. it drives superb it is the best car i have ever owned with out a doubt. another mate of mine has a 97 s320 with 175,000 miles on it and in my opinion is tired to say the least and drives so differently to mine.
in my opinion i think the years are irrelevant its how they have been looked after that counts for much more. hope my input is of some use.
