Where to start? The Italians or the Germans?
Mother wants a 600sel/S600 w 50k miles or less

Hello all,

Wrong section of the forum I know, but my mother is looking for a W140 600sel/S600 with less than 50,000 miles (the fewer the better and she would be willing to pay well for a very low mileage example) in the smoke silver (champagne looking color) over a tan interior. It would be nice if the rear seat was adjustable as well and if the rear of the car had a seperate temperature and fan speed control for the A/C but those are not necessary. Any thoughts on how rare a car like this is to find? Anyone have a car they are willing to part with?

Thanks much,
Rick

Go to www.benzworld.org in the W140 section there is a sticky called Interesting Ebay Items

There is a S600 for sale that meets your requirement of champagne looking color over a
tan interior. It is the newest post.

For your information all 600's have reclining rear seats and rear climate control standard.

Is there any reason she is only interested in the 600?

Keep us updated if your get one.

She has a 500sel and an S500 and being as old as she is, shes tired of only having the V-8's. She also despises all newer Mercedes. She says that MB's last good quality car was the W140, and to be honest I agree with her. Please don't start a huge debate on which is the best MB as I'm not in the mood to argue about what she thinks. She is 61 years old this year, and she plans on driving W140's until the day she dies so she is trying to get a few of the nicer examples together to last her for the rest of her years.

1992 600 SEL
1992 600 SEL for sale with 38,000 original miles

I have a 92 600 SEL with 38,000 original miles. It's my only car (I live during the week in NYC so garage it and travel mainly by taxi or subway). Afraid I am going to have to part with it because it won't make it up my cabin driveway in winter and I've had to put so much money into it. I bought it summer 2007 with 5,400 original miles (belonged to a collector who died). All documented with DMV, etc. Looks nearly perfect but has had issues related to age (not use). New wiring harness a week after I bought it (+/- $13,000), new AC condensor and suspension work last summer ($11,000), in the shop again right now with quotes for new catalytic converter ($2100) and new heater blower motor ($1700). And roughly another $10,000 in minor things here and there -- regular maintenance, new tires, etc. It's a magnificent piece of machinery and I absolutely love it but I just can't afford the upkeep and it deserves not to be struggling up a snowy gravel driveway every weekend.

Known problems: Will soon need new brake pads/rotors, new upper control arms/bushings (have already replaced lowers). Interior rear view mirror rattles (I'm looking for a replacement -- Mercedes Manhattan wants another $2,000 for that).

Any interest? It's dark flat blue (Westminster blue) with a honey-colored interior. The most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

You need to find a good shop, It appears that any service you have done is at maximum dollar amount.
MB did my air at less than $6,000 Mb good willed part of it, the blower motor is overpriced, they good willed my harness, I saw a mirror here for a few hundred

Do you have pictures? The maintainence is to be expected, it is a Mercedes after all.

Well I found her a 94 600sel with 56k (?) miles in her color combination she likes (smoke silver over tan) two weeks ago. She went ahead and checked it out and purchased it. It'll be arriving tomorrow morning via FedEx. I'll post up pictures ASAP.

LOL! That's what I said when I heard about it--apparently FedEx has a car transporting service now. But anyway it was picked up from Washington this last weekend.

There are quite a number of 92/93/94 600 SEL's for sale throughout the country. Over 12/14 grand for a 50K is too much. The going rate seems to be 10~12K for low mileage 600's from the early 90's.
Sellers want as much as possible...buyers want to spend as little as possible. I typed in the Yahoo search bar...1993 600 sel's for sale and got a few pages of hits. A low mileage car does not mean problem free. And just because one owns a MB, does not meant they can afford it!

Well, we took delivery of it today... Wish I could say I was happy about it but I'm not. It needs a lot of work. The tranny shifts very hard, car idles like sh*t, needs new wood trim on the center console near the gear shift, needs new rims (nasty chrome ones do not work on this car IMO), needs a new front bumper (the tow hook covers are loose), the rear seat heaters do not work, the rear window shade is fishy when you try to lower it, the right rear headrest does not recline, two of the doors creak when opened/closed, the left rear window needs to be pulled up when opened, the sunroof creaks/squeaks, the trunk is off center slightly and also creaks, squeaks when closed and is also hard to shut, the rear bumper has a small part that looks like it was spray painted/touched up very poorly, the grill has a chrome metal piece that is bent, the map lights in the back are burnt out, the radio head is beat up and faded, the wood around the front passenger door seat adjustment is coming off and loose, the cloth on the drivers side b-pillar is coming off and needs to be replaced, the carpet on the trunk lid needs to be re-installed as it is also coming off, the seat belts all need to be replaced because they are all dirty and grimy, there is a light out warning that appears to be false (all exterior lights seem to be working fine), the hood lining needs to be replaced because there is a chunk of it that's missing, the check engine light has already come on, the tires have no tread left, the roof lining has a bunch of lines where some douche cleaned it poorly with a carpet cleaner, the carpet trim around the inside of the doors is very dirty, the gear shift is in poor condition, a lot of the black plastic trim is faded, the rear a/c needs to be checked as it does not seem to blow hot air only cold, there's an 8-10 inch long scratch/scrape on the roof, there is a scrape/dent on the right fender, there are scrapes/scratches on the lowest part of the body in between the wheels.... and this was advertised as a "pristine" car--thank you ebay!!

Well, according to our local shop, this car has what they are estimating to be somewhere between 150-180k miles... not the advertised 58k miles... I'll update as I find more out about this developing disaster

It's buyer beware...I am a firm believer that folks sell items...especially cars...because they are having headaches with it. Most times the seller will look you straight in the eye and tell you...no problems, etc. and when you buy it...you find out differently. True, you can many times find a great buy...buy people sell their headaches!
Buying sight unscene...taking a chance.
When buying in person, I tell the seller...I want to test the car for 2 days....I will give you a deposit now with the deal that after two days if I don't want to buy it, you return my money. If the seller tells me no, then I already know that the car has problems that were not disclosed. I look elsewhere.
I test drive a car for a few hours making sure the gauges work, not overheating, transmission shifts correctly, etc. Then I let it sit for 15/20 minutes and do a hot start up and see what happens. In the morning, I do a cold start up. I also remover the dash and check to see if the check engine bulb is working, removed or burnt. Many times I have pulled the dash and come to find out that the bulb is missing! I also plug in my scanner for codes. Many sellers clear the codes prior to selling....some codes come back on after an hour, some right away and some the following day.
Look for oil and transmission fluid leaks. Look at the bottom of the engine for leaks....buying a used car...especially 10 plus years old....vacuum lines are worn and brittle....
Test the A/C system....many folks have the system recharged before selling....good to go for a week/month and then no more freon...leak in the system! Look for signs of a freon leak. Better yet....hook up a set of A/C gauges and test the system or pay a shop to test it! You're thinking of spending thousands of dollars to buy this car....50/100 bucks to test the system is good insurance!
A seller will usually allow you to test their car and have it checked over...I want it overnight however. Just because the seller has maintenance records does not mean no problems exsist! I look the car over as well as I can...when I open the trunk and see a gallon of anti freeze or a quart of oil....I suspect problems. You don't use/loose coolant unles you have a leak. I see a few quarts of oil in the trunk...problems. Sure, many folks carry a spare quart of oil...you got to check still.

Did I read that right? $33,000 for a 93 W140? How do they justify asking that much?

We are going to give the car to our mechanic and let him sell it. The car has so many problems its not even worth trying to fix it. The estimated repair cost is $25k. So we are back on the hunt yet again. I will check out MBCA later today and see what I can come up with for her.

Sorry it took me so long but the seller's ebay ID is: FMC_1990. It's Freeman Motor Company in Portland, Oregon. My mother says he did not give any extra info about the car, and he danced around with her when she asked him questions. It looks like somewhere down the road somebody swapped out the entire instrument cluster (it had the updated ['95+] digital odometer). Anyway, she just bought another S600 today. Its a '95 with the smoke silver (champagne) exterior as well as a two tone dark brown and tan interior. It's got just under 100k miles, but looks like new. At least from the ebay pictures. She bought it for $9k. I'll keep you posted when it comes and post up some pictures asap

Okay, just got the car yesterday (i'd have pix but it's in the shop to have the shocks and fluids changed). It's amazing. It's actually a '96 S600 with 89k miles, smoke silver exterior with the two tone dark brown/light tan interior, it has a wood steering wheel, fully stitched leather dash and door panels, rear sun shade, movable seats, four zone a/c, etc etc. It looks great! I'll post up pix as soon as we get her car back.
