W140 steering differences?

Keeping the story brief and short: my mother's '92 500sel and '98 S500 steer completely differently. The '92 has a very light steering at low speed (parking lot speeds) and at highway speed it "stiffens up" (which feels amazing...it gives a lot of positive feedback). Her '98 on the other hand, steers like a wet noodle at all speeds. The '98 has a very light, floopsie doodle steering that I absolutely hate! What year did they change how these cars (500sel/S500) steer? Was it in '95 or '96?

Thanks much!
Rick
