On my w126 the alternator has a removable voltage regulator.I don't know about your car.My regulator was bad and I was getting 18 volts.I replaced it and got another year out of the alternator before rebuilding it,a few weeks ago.
Over charging can weaken other things like radio, lights ect... It can also mean that battery has shorted cell.

I read somewhere in a technical manual it looks like the system checks for over and under voltage.
Having said that, I had my instrument cluster rebuilt for the very common flashing issue on the early 140s. The cluster came back and the battery light came on after the inital startup and would flicker in a random fashion for a while. I assumed the alternator had failed and MB and my indi verified charging. The end result was that after replacing the alternator, the random flashing continued, and one day it was gone, and has not returned.
