This is all good news for the 140. IMHO they hit a dip around 2009 where they were a dime a dozen. Now much more serious owners have them, are much more educated in their engineering and upkeep, and they're following the path of true collectors cars.
But remember - a lot of cars you see at Barret Jackson are original. Many a Ferrari, Cadillac, 40 Ford, 56 Chevy, 60s muscle cars etc have been hacked to suit the owner. In that case, only the owner/hacker really appreciates it, and they often go unsold. I saw an old SL that easily had $50k in mods that sold for $2500.00, much to the disgust of the owner. Harley's are the worst along these lines.
But hey, that may be where this model of Merc is going - toward very extravagant mods. I mean, the owner bought it, he can do whatever he wants to with it. So if he's never going to resell it, it doesn't matter who else likes it (other than the wife lol). But my point is a lot of these cars with $30k in mods are worthless on the open market - unless you can find that ONE person that agrees with your thinking/work.
Dealers will simply not buy some of the units depicted in this photo thread, as they know they'll never sell. I saw one come in for purchase one day, and the GM said he could never have something like that "stinking up the lot" lol. Such is the commercial market. However, some of the more original units with superior upkeep etc will experience people knocking on their door with $20k of cash in hand when it sits in the driveway
Glad to be a part of this forum. Just got my 1996 Mercedes S320 in Oct. of 2012. This is my first one and I love the way it drives. When I got it there was only 94,000 miles and was garage kept.

I did purchase the instrument cluster wood trim on eBay - that is the only "fake" wood but for $40 versus $200+ I am REALLY happy with it! I bought my burl walnut veneer online from a wood supply place - that stuff is almost (if not more) expensive per ounce than gold! Each sheet (12" x 12") was about $20-30 (VERY thin!) I layered it on thin hardwood forms for the rear light trim, dash trim, and without backing for the buttons on the door locks, rear armrest button, rear ashtray buttons, and B pillar trim (in the style of the 600). Custom mixed wood stain to make it perfectly match the rest (MB uses a slightly reddish tint/redwood stain). It takes a lot of hours to layer up the lacquer!
Reconstruction: man, don't ask! LOL! Back in 2003 when these were still only the "previous model" and it went for $20-30K for a good used one, I bought it for $4500 and spent about $17K to rebuild it RIGHT. A couple costly mistakes added to that (the moonroof blew out while in transport to the shop since I forgot to rebolt is on after doing some minor repair!) But, as I did the rebuild, I loved it and had things rebuilt back to "new or better" condition, AND got to know my baby inside-out! It's now 11 years later, up to 193,700 miles, and still runs/looks like a champ, and everything works!
... However, some of the more original units with superior upkeep etc will experience people knocking on their door with $20k of cash in hand when it sits in the driveway
...and yes, I had a guy walk up to me in a parking lot one and say "OK - right now: how much do you want for it?!"
He was serious. But when I told him I couldn't sell my baby, he smiled and nodded. W140. Gotta love 'em!
