Ignition problems 1999 s420

Today when I put my key into the ignition it will not turn to the #1 position. It will turn out of the zero position but will not engage all the way to start the car. If I hold the key against the #1 position I do get my srs light and all electrical functions work. One thing I noticed when rapidly turning the key back and forth I hear a clang/bop noise under the drivers footwell like something is engaging nut not all the way. I noticed too when removing the key from the ignition it does not make that noise it makes when removing it. I just pull the key out.

Any suggestions before taking it to a repair shop?

Your tumbler is going bad... if you can get it in to 1st position you will be able to replace what ever part is bad tumbler, ignition switch or steering lock but if it locks up and wont go in to 1 then you have to drill the steering lock out

Key stuck in ignition

If your key is stuck in the ignition you should send your car to the wreckers. Very expensive fix. I have been through it twice. If your key is old you should replace it now. Don't wait.

Replace your ignition so you wont get stranded somewhere and have to pay a tow bill that will be as much as a ignition switch.
